“My kids loved Cars,” Michelle begins her story slowly, delicately. “They especially loved the little truck ‘Mater’. Whenever they saw a Mater toy in the store, they begged and pleaded, and the little trucks didn’t cost very much, so I usually gave in—easier than dealing with the fussing and whining, ya know?” Michelle smiles just a little.
“Of course, I knew that, although they carried the Mattel brand, the toys were made in China. The Chinese manufacturer partly accounted for why we could afford to build-up a whole collection of trucks, sports cars, and exotic little Fiats. I think they’re Fiats.”
Michelle’s face turns somber. “Well, you know what every kid does with every new toy: sooner or later it ends-up in his mouth. A kid thinks of his mouth as, like a third hand. Billy could carry three trucks around if he put one in his mouth. So, he did. Who thought it would do any harm?”
Tears well-up in Michelle’s eyes. “But then Billy got sick, and he felt sluggish and weak, and he had trouble concentrating and remembering. Our Billy just wasn’t our Billy any more. Turns out Billy had lead poisoning from the paint on his beloved trucks. Now, it will take him years to recover.”
Drying her tears, Michelle nods emphatically, “The way we see it, Mattel owes us a lot for all Billy has suffered and will have to endure.”
