When patients undergo medical treatment they expect to be told about possible side effect so they can make informed health care decisions. However, manufactures of the drug Taxotere took this right away from patients when they failed to disclose the drug could cause permanent hair loss (alopecia).
In our review of this case the manufacturer of Taxotere, Sanofi-Aventis, did not indicate a warning for permanent hair loss on their U.S. sold Taxotere until 2015, almost 20 years after the drug was brought into our market. However, Sanofi-Aventis did include warnings for permanent hair loss on Taxotere sold in Canada and in Europe.
For patients undergoing cancer treatment, temporary hair loss can be traumatic. Permanent hair loss without warning, that could have been prevented, is devastating, not to mention unjustifiable and grounds for legal action.
While the psychological impact of hair loss affects both genders, women tend to be especially hard hit by the loss. In fact in many cases women suffering from chemotherapy related hair loss, who have recovered from cancer, say they have not made a full recovery due to their baldness.
Making matters worse for patients dealing with permanent hair loss after chemotherapy is that they were not given a choice in the matter, even though cancer drugs without similar risks are available.
In fact, multiple studies have confirmed the link between Taxotere and permanent hair loss. To top of Sanofi-Aventis’s unjustifiable actions, their own studies estimate a conservative 3% of patients given Taxotere could suffer persistent or permanent hair loss.
