Construction workers face some of the highest risks for workplace injuries with 1 in 10 workers injured each year. In fact, falls are the leading cause of workplace deaths and injuries on construction sites. However, in most cases, these accidents could have been prevented.
According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) fall prevention is the most violated standard among worksites. In response, OSHA created the Fall Prevention Campaign designed to raise awareness of fall prevention through 3 simple steps:
- PLAN – planning the job in advance will increase safety as workers will already know what tasks will be involved and what safety equipment will be needed to get the job done safely.
- PROVIDE – the correct equipment should be provided including fall protection, the correct type of ladders, scaffolds, and safety gear.
- TRAIN – educate workers for proper set-up and safe ways to use provided equipment.
In addition to the steps above, OSHA and the Health Administration and Center for Construction Research and Training has created an app to help workers safely position ladders and aid in the use of proper safety equipment. Reminders include:
- Use of hardhats
- Use of proper equipment
- Importance of safety procedures on the jobsite to decrease preventable workplace injuries
